it's dry then wet then dry then we see clearing tomorrow so the return of sunshine. how much rainfall? looks like a tenth to a quarter inch for most. then it's dry through the weekend. the extended forecast to come in just a few minutes. >> jadiann: thank you so much. let's get over to rich kirkland and talk about the roads. >> rich: good morning. kind of like a monday all over again as we set up for the holiday. live on the turnpike. most rides are good. there's the expressway. that's good too and downtown is quiet. north shore commuters, we're getting word of a crash in peabody on 128 southbound by lowell street. happened only a few minutes ago. the t says on time. rich kirkland, "7 news today in new england." >> jadiann: we begin with breaking news from overnight this morning. a cruiser crash on the cape involving a wrong-way driver. >> christa: the accident trapped the trooper inside his vehicle so let's get out to nicole oliverio. she's along route 6. you have more on his condition, also what we have learned about

>> reporter: we do know that state trooper will be okay but it took a while for firefighters to get him out of his patrol car after a head-on crash that happened because of the wrong-way driver. they were called out to be told there was a driver heading the wrong way on route 6. what is unclear is exactly how long the driver had been traveling the wrong way. that driver did collide with the state trooper. barnstable fire responded and got the state trooper out. he was taken to cape cod you hospital with injuries but we're told he's going to be okay. the driver was also questioned by police who arrived on the scene. we're told it was an elderly driver who had medical issues so it's unclear if the driver will face charges. he was also taken to the hospital just to be treated to make sure that he was all right. we're live in barnstable, nicole oliverio, "7 news today in new england." >> christa: thank you. also breaking overnight investigators trying to figure out what sparked a fire in a

home in harvard. crews put out the flames inside a mill road home early this morning. it appears the fire damaged the left side of the home but no injuries are reported. >> jadiann: two people are recovering from minor injuries after a bad crash in lowell. two vehicles collided at the intersection of aiken and lake view avenues last night. the suv then hit a building but didn't break through the wall. boston police issuing a serious warning about a dangerous trend involving online dating websites. victoria warren is live for us this morning with more on this story. this comes after several people say they were actually robbed. >> reporter: that's right. and police say that people need to be very smart when they're using these online dating websites. they're very concerned about these robberies that have been linked to phony profiles. a perfect patrol fi that is not what it seems. >> it's really scary, especially being alone and, you know, talking over social media is

usually a one-on-one thing. >> police say someone is trolling the internet looking for an easy target. it's called catfishing in the last five weeks six people report meeting someone on line. when they show up to meet face-to-face, a setup. a guy pulls out a gun and robs them. >> if you meet someone on line, you should meet in public. >> the robberies happened when the victims were lured to homes in roxbury or mattapan. when using online dating sites, do your homework. face time, skype or web chat first. if they don't, they could be hiding something. another red flag, incomplete profile. >> try to see if they have facebook. >> trust your i think instincts. if things seem too good to be true, there's a chance they are. >> i mean you can't really tell

i guess do your due process, ask questions. >> luckily there are no reports of anyone getting hurt. though boston police worry there may additional victims out there. so if you know anything that can help police in this investigation, they want to hear from you. live from boston police headquarters, victoria warren, "7 news today in new england." >> christa: new this morning, more than three years after the attack overseas in benghazi, congress is closer to providing glen doherty's family with the benefits that so far they've been denied. let's go to nancy chen in the control room with more. >> reporter: good morning. this battle has been going on since 2012 due stephen lynch told "boston herald" congress is close to a solution. glen doherty, a former navy seal was killed in the 2012 benghazi attacks. no one is against him receiving death benefits, they're just

trying to figure out where the money comes from. he died when militants attacked the u.s. consulate. the insurance company refuses to pay a claim to his sister and mother because he did no have a wife or children. the family doesn't just want benefits but wants to see legislation passed to make sure it doesn't happen to other families. >> jadiann: also police in san francisco are looking to determine why a man pointed a rifle at a hospital. officers shot and killed the man wednesday. investigators say the man climbed the scaffolding at the construction site and aimed the rifle at st. luke's hospital wednesday afternoon. officers shot him when he pointed the gun toward them. no one else was hurt. the man stole the rifle from a sporting goods store earlier in the day. a big blast at a new jersey home kills one and leaves a dozen injured. you can see debris falling as the explosion happened in this suburbans neighborhood.

crews don't knowhe cause but believe it's gas related. two victims are in critical condition, the other ten are being treated at local hospitals. >> christa: we have new details on the deadly plane rash in ohio. investigators are looking into what went wrong after recovering the cockpit voice recorder from the crash. a told of nine people were killed when a small jet crashed into an apartment building in akron. including two pilots and seven passengers, employees of a property management firm in florida. a sister of one of the victims feared the worst after hearing about the crash. >> i texted her after the -- after i saw the news report and she didn't reply and between the siblings we started doing detective work and made some calls and checked flight plans and kind of put two and two together that it was her. >> investigators at a lab in washington are reviewing what is on the voice recorder. >> jadiann: reported bomb threats forced police to

increase security on the campus of the university of missouri days after the school president resigned. tim wolff resigned monday in response to protests on how the school handled racial incidents ask. students received threats following their protest that led overall to step down. students and faculty members say they're concerned. >> i'm getting a lot of messages about students feeling unsafe. i've heard rumors of kkk are on campus. i thought i would come and look for myself. >> people are shooting all black people tomorrow or threats basically. who knows if it's real but i don't want to be here in case. >> some students left campus temporarily and fear for their safety. >> christa: the race for the white house. several republican candidates will be up in new hampshire

>> christa: good morning, look at the damage being reported across iowa this morning after powerful storms and tornadoes reported there. officials say in some areas wind gusts reached up to 70 miles an hour. you can see some of the damage done in town at this wal-mart. look at that rig, just toppled over. many schools had to hold students inside until the storm passed. >> jadiann: powerful winds there. able to knock a tractor-trailer over. bri says we're not going to have as many winds today. >> christa: it was gusty at times yesterday. >> bri: it was amazing yesterday across the country and even in the atlantic we tracked

hurricane kate. she's long gone, not even a hurricane. but that powerful storm system we saw there, we're expecting the front to swing through today for us. current temperatures, low to mid 40s. temperatures really haven't moved a lot through the day yesterday through last night and into this morning. it stayed consistent because of the cloud cover. the cloud cover again thickening as we get through the later morning hours. here's that front, cruising. this storm system was in st. louis when i checked in before bed and here we go with a front moving through this afternoon. it takes until lunchtime for the wet weather tap to turn on again. it's scattered showers so you've got dry moments then moments that are a little wetter so grab the umbrella as you head out and it's an umbrella day because the winds are lighter. you won't lose it or risk it being broken but the showers stay with us from midday until 10:00 or 11:00 tonight.

expecting downpours or heavy rain like yesterday. clearing out for tomorrow. finally that sunshine back in the forecast on friday, appropriately. we'll be all tgif hash tagging on twitter. rainfall amounts this afternoon only a tenth of an inch to a quarter inch at best. there may be a few areas. can't promise it will be taunton but closer to a half inch. that's pushing it. we're not talking about a lot of rain but that's our best chance at getting any drops of water through the rest of the week and into the weekend. even into next week. today clouds, afternoon showers, 50 to 55 for highs. 50. 52 for boston, duxbury 55. the cape, low to mid 50s. tonight showers early but the clear kicks in. for the return of sunshine tomorrow. i can't promise there won't be clouds but look at the high tomorrow.

close to 60 degrees though winds are back in the forecast and it stays brisk and breezy throughout the weekend but returns to 60-degrees next week. >> jadiann: thank you. officials with the faa are investigating two instances of lasers pointed at helicopters in new york city. the chopper for the nbc affiliate in new york was in the air when the reporter and pilot noticed someone pointing a green laser at them. that's when they contacted police. >> hitting us right now. don't look, george. you think this is a joke, huh? >> there you heard it, the laser appeared to come coming from behind a restaurant. police swarmed the area and arrested the man. police department helicopter when it arrived to investigate. a group of firefighters rushing to the rescue of a dog trapped in a well in taunton. >> christa: after taking a

well, the crews had to jury-rig a harness. >> reporter: you always hear about cats with nine lives. when the call came in, firefighters had to think quickly because they didn't have a harness for a dog so one firefighter had the idea to connect two harnesses meant for people and it worked. >> are. >> buddy plummeted 25 feet to the bottom of a well. firefighters had their hands full trying to pull him out safely. >> buddy. >> buddy he's feeling much better. the two-year-old spent what must have felt like weeks at the bottom of the well. >> he's probably hungry and thinking he's going to die. >> monday night his owners thought buddy was nearby. >> i heard him barking but he's always barking so i didn't think anything. >> then silence. the next morning buddy was nowhere to be found. the family looked you would all over but buddy's father found

him. >> our other dog was standing on the rocks near there and looking down so we thought he might be down there and we went to go look and saw him looking up at us. >> the family called the fire department. >> when we got there, i went to the well and looked down and i couldn't believe how deep it was. >> a firefighter climbed down and attacked a makeshift harness to buddy and hoisted him up. >> it started to slip towards the back so we readjusted and it worked out. >> everybody's glad buddy is home. >> we were happy and it was a nice happy ending that he come out well, you can see. >> despite the fall buddy didn't have a scratch and the well has been covered rereinforced but it will be filled so something like this can never happen again. england." >> christa: the old stereotype of the firefighter rescuing the cat in the tree and the dog in the well. >> jadiann: glad everyone came out okay.

southbound side in andover by 495 so a backup there. other highways are all right and the t is okay too. rich kirkland, "7 news today in new england." >> jadiann: 46 degrees outside and here's what's breaking overnight. a state trooper has been released from the hospital following an accident on the route 6 in barnstable. state police say a pickup truck driving the wrong way crashed into his cruiser last night. crews had to be called toting the trooper out of his vehicle. he suffered minor injuries. investigators say the driver is an elderly man who has medical issues. it's not known if he'll face charges. boston police are warning users of online dating sites after a string of armed robberies seconded to catfishing. in five weeks six people were lured to homes in red roxbury and mattapan where they were robbed. you should always meet in a public place first.

glen doherty's family death benefits. stephen lynch says they're just trying to figure out where the money will come from. doherty a former navy seal was one of four americans killed in the benghazi attacks. >> christa: game over for a lowell man. police arrested him after a bizarre call for help. a pennsylvania man contacted them about what sounded like a desperate call for help from another gamer while playing call of duty. apparently she said she was held cuoco. quite a story. maybe you can sort it out for us. >> reporter: the woman at the center of this says the case is being blown out of proportion. the video game call of duty is explosions. early tuesday morning, that dramatic violence became too pennsylvania who was playing with a woman in lowell.

he tells us by phone she told him she had been kidnapped. >> they said they would kill her if she left the house. >> so the pennsylvania man called police several states away to report a stranger in trouble. >> dispatch gets a call from a person in pennsylvania. he says he's playing an online game with a woman in lowell who tells him she's being held against her will. >> police immediately went to do a well-being check at an apartment and found the woman say she wasn't kidnapped. she just had a fight with her boyfriend. she tells 7news it's a case of miscommunication. while investigators were in the apartment, they say they found a replica ar15 assault rifle and drugs. they arrested and charged the woman's boyfriend, jose white. the tipster says he did what he thought was right. >> i wasn't trying to bust the entire house. he was mainly trying to help a friend with her health and well-being. this was the first time i've

thought it was necessary that it needed to be done. >> reporter: 7news also spoke with the suspect in this case off-camera and he says he was wrongly arrested. live in lowell, john quo co, "7 news today in new england." >> jadiann: boston police arrested a suspect following a shooting in hyde park. officers arrested the 19-year-old at his apartment early yesterday morning. they say they recovered a .22-caliber ruger handgun which may have been used in the shooting. the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries. the suspect is facing several charges. the charlestown man accused of pointing a fake gun at a driver in somerville will be arraigned. gary impressive enter the was arrested tuesday after he allegedly pointed a gun at a woman during a road rage incident. the begun's orange tip was covered with black paint making it look like a real weapon.

unclear but the crash happened just after exit 6. so state police got a report of that wrong-way driver so they were two police cruisers actually out and trying to slow down traffic to prevent other drivers from getting hit. that's when the wrong-way driver collided head-on with the state police cruiser a half mile from where we're standing. the fire department was called and it took a while to get the state trooper out of his patrol car. he had to be taken to cape cod hospital with injuries but police tell us he's expected to be okay and he's been released from the hospital. the elderly driver was also treated to make sure he was all right. nicole oliverio, "7 news today in new england." >> jadiann: a dover, new hampshire police need your help finding this man in connection with a suspected arson. i lit a car on fire at an apartment building parking lot last week.

when it arrived to investigate. a family pet finds himself in a lot of trouble. trapped in a deep well. the poor guy spent the night at the bottom of the well. >> rescuers were able to get him out safely and they had to be creative in how they did this. let's go to nancy chen with the story. >> reporter: pretty scary. you always hear about cats with nine lives. when the call came in, firefighters had to think quickly because they didn't have a harness for a dog. one firefighter connected two harnesses that are meant for people and it turns out it worked. >> buddy plummeted 25 feet to the bottom of a well on monday. firefighters had their hands full trying to pull him out safely tuesday. he's feeling much better. the two-year-old dog spent what have felt like weeks at the bottom of the well. >> he's probably hungry and >> monday night his owners thought buddy was nearby. >> i heard him barking but

he's -- he's always barking so i didn't think anything of it. >> then silence. the next morning buddy was nowhere to be found. the family looked all over but it was buddy's actual father who found him. >> the other dog was standing on the -- like one of the rocks near there and looking down there so we thought that he might be down there and we went to go look down there and saw him looking up at us. >> the family immediately called the fire department. >> when we got there i went to the well and looked down and i couldn't believe how deep it was. >> a firefighter climbed down and attached a makeshift harness to buddy and hoisted him up. >> halfway up it slipped so we readjusts it and it worked out fine. >> everyone's glad buddy is home. >> it was a nice, happy ending that he come out -- well, you can see. >> he looks pretty happy. despite the fall buddy didn't have a scratch on him.

arsonist in dover, new hampshire and police need your help finding the man in this picture. she say he lit a car on fire at an apartment building in a parking lot last week. anyone with any information is asked to reach out to police. police in pittsfield say a scrap yard worker helped them recover two stolen cemetery markers that belonged to veterans. the worker called police to in. they were likely stolen from a nearby cemetery and plan to press charges against the person who brought them in. >> jadiann: the area around td garden is about to get a makeover with a massive shopping, entertainment and housing project coming next door. after major hurdles the project was given the green light. plans call for apartments, a hotel, supermarket a movie theater, a bowling alley and office space on causeway street. 800 parking spots will be added. construction will begin soon.

driving the wrong way on the highway but state police got the call the headlights were heading in the wrong direction. there were two state police cruisers trying to slow down any other drivers on route 6 to try to prevent an accident. it was just around exit 6 where the wrong-way driver collided head-on with one of the state police patrol cars. the fire department respond the. the trooper was taken to cape cod hospital with minor injuries. he's already been released from the hospital. as for the elderly driver, because of the medical issues, it's unclear if he's facing any charges but he was also taken to the hospital as a precaution to be treated. live in barnstable, nicole england." >> jadiann: two people are recovering from minor injuries after a bad crash in lowell. two vehicles collided at the intersection of aiken and lake view avenues. the suv then hit a building knocking some bricks off the wall.

out a warning about a dating >> christa: investigators say that crooks are pretending to be someone they're not on line then are robbing people they meet. let's head out to victoria warren in boston. you have more on the story and ways that people can stay safe. >> reporter: boston police are very worried and they say people need to be smart when using online dating services, especially after the reports of robberies. you need to look out for phony profiles. it's something that police are calling catfishing. it's when the victims contact an online dating profile and agree to meet an a residence. when the victim arrives at the house, the man armed with a gun approaches them and robs them. boston police believe there have been six incidents over the past five weeks at homes in mattapan and roxbury. anybody using an online dating website needs to be on the lookout for photos that seem too

pointed at two news helicopters last night in new york city. the first incident, the reporter and pilot in the chopper for wnbc noticed someone pointing a green laser at them. they contacted police and officers arrested the man. a similar incident happened to the abc station in brooklyn. faa recovered the cockpit recorder from the plane crash in ohio when it crashed into an empty apartment building. seven passengers were employees of a property management firm in florida. investigators are reviewing what's on the voice recorder. >> christa: more than 100 women are suing a pharmaceutical company after a birth control mixup led them to get pregnant. birth control packs were labeled incorrectly leading the order of the pills that you take to be reversed. they got pregnant and the women now want the pill maker to pay
